An explanation to mirage

沙漠海市蜃楼的一种现象就是在某一时间段远方的沙漠上就像出现了一片波光粼粼的大海，沙漠上的景物甚至有倒影。

A mirage in desert is a phenomenon that in a remote area, in certain period oftime, a mercury-like surface appears rippling up in the desert reflecting thethings in that area.

这种现象是由于不同密度的空气产生了一定的层次，不同密度层次的空气之间的界面反射一部分光线。如果两个相邻层次的空气密度比达到某个值，就会发生全反射，如同光导纤维一样，入射光全部反射回来！这样人们就看不见空气下面的沙漠，如同看见波光粼粼的大海！

The explanation of this phenomenon is that the heat of sun causes the deferenceof density of layers of air, and the interface between the layers reflects thelight of the sun and that from other things. When the ratio of the densities ofthe adjacent layers of air reaches a certain value, the total reflectionhappens that is governed by the same law as with the optical fiber—incidentlight is entirely reflected! And observers in remote area could not find whatbeneath that layer of air, what they see is like a reflecting sea!

Should we change the densities of layers of air on demand and produceartificial mirage, we would revolutionize the camouflage of militaryobjectives!

PS：在海底也有某个区域能把超声波全部反射，称为“液体海底”，如果潜艇在这个区域内就可以隐身，不被其他水域的声纳发现。
