In our jobs, we may have occasions to communicate with people in other countries or from other cultures. Whether we are buying, selling, consulting, or simply trying to obtain information, we will need to get across ideas to an audience we are not used to dealing with. Just as we need to understand the characteristics of our audience when we communicate with others from our own country, we need to understand something about the culture, business customs, and communication styles of foreign audiences. Here, then, are some tips to assist you in your intercultural3) communications. 1. Be Clear And Simple. Whether communicating orally or in writing, avoid long, complex sentences, highly technical language, jargon4), and colloquialisms5)。 Don't be condescending6), but do use simpler words when they are available. 2. Don't Assume That Someone You Hear Speaking English Will Understand You. If you talk too fast, slur your words or have an accent, even a foreigner who seems to speak perfect English will have a hard time following you. An added problem is that many English-speaking foreigners are too polite to let you know they haven' t understood. 3. Learn The Business Customs And Terminology Of Those You Will Be Communicating With. For example, we use the metric system of measurement, the US uses a different system of measurement. And many countries use the day /month /year system for dating as opposed to the US system of month /day /year. A meeting arranged in one of these countries on 7. 5. 89 is scheduled for May, not July. 4. Use Written Messages Whenever Possible. You read English more easily than you understand spoken English. If you communicate by phone, follow up with a confirmation in writing to guard against miscommunication. 5. Don' t Be In A Hurry To Get To The Point. Europeans, Africans, and Arabs in particular, are put off by the straight-to-the-point style of North American business communication. They prefer a more round-about approach. 6. Don' t Ask Questions That Require A Yes Or No Answer. Whereas North Americans tend to say yes when they mean yes and no when they mean no, that's simply not the case in most other cultures. In Asian countries, for example, it is considered impolite to say no, so Asians may answer affirmatively7) if only to mean“Yes, I heard you. ”Europeans, on the other hand, may initially react negatively to any question, but they actually mean“maybe”or“it depends. ”In many countries, the answer you get is what the person thinks you want to hear. 7. Learn About The Country's Body Language. Gestures8) have various meanings in different places. In Yugoslavia turning the head from side to side means yes;in Japan, looking someone in the eye is considered judgmental or hostile;and in Ghana, thumbs up is a rude gesture. To avoid giving offense, keep your hands quiet. 8. Control Your Style Of Expression. The North American style of expressing emotions is considered impulsive and wild by Asians but restrained and cold by Latin Americans. You need to be aware of how your habits of emotional expression will affect people in a particular culture. 9. Don' t Interrupt Periods Of Silence. Many foreigners are offended by the North American penchant for jumping in to fill any gaps in a conversation. Speakers in many cultures enjoy periods of silence and use them to gather their thoughts. Be patient. Allow the person to formulate what he or she wants to say, and try not to be“helpful ”by putting words into the other person's mouth.

例一:floating It is not surprising, then, that the world saw a return to a floating exchange rate system. Central banks were no longer required to support their own currencies. Floating policy is of great importance for export trade; it is, in fact, a convenient method of insuring goods where a number of similar export transactions are intended, e.g. where the insured has to supply an overseas importer under an exclusive sales agreement or maintains sales representatives or subsidiary companies abroad. 例二:confirm We'd like to inform you that our counter sample will be sent to you by DHL by the end of this week and please confirm it ASAP so that we can start our mass production. Payment will be made by 100% confirmed, irrevocable Letter of Credit available by sight draft。 例三:negotiable Part time barman required.Hours and salary negotiable. This Bill of Lading is issued in a negotiable form, so it shall constitute title to the goods and the holder, by endorsement of this B/L. 例四:discount You may get a 5% discount if your order is on a regular basis. If a seller extends credit to a time draft, they have made a trade acceptance. The seller can request that the bank finance the transaction by buying the draft. The bank is said to discount the draft. 例五:endorse Our products have been endorsed by the National Quality Inspection Association. Draft must be accompanied by full set original on board marine Bill off Lading made out to order, endorsed in blank, marked freight prepaid. 例六:average If a particular cargo Is partially damaged, the damage is called particular average. It's obvious that the products are below the average quality. 例七:tender Under CIF, it is the seller's obligation to tender the relative documents to the buyer to enable him to obtain delivery of the goods. If they arrive, or to recover for the loss, if they are lost on the voyage. He became as exhilarated as if his tender for building a mansion had been accepted.

“can you tell me more about your campany?”“what do you think of our proposal?” 进口商常常会问:“can not you do better than that?” 对此不要让步,而应反问:“what is meant by better?”或“better than what?” 进口商:“your competitor is offering better terms.” III. 典型的条件问句有“what…if”,和“if…then”这两个句型。 如:“what would you do if we agree to a two-year contract?” 及“if we modif your specifications, would you consider a larger order?” (4)代替“no”。“would you be willing to meet the extra cost if we meet your additional requirements?”

Meat is dear this week. (这个星期肉很贵) Diamonds are very dear. How much does it cost?(这辆车多少钱?) It's a rip off.(贵得太离谱了。) It cost me an arm and a leg。 Cost somebody an arm and a leg,要某人的一手一脚,真要命,引伸指“非常昂贵”。 It cost me an arm and a leg.

1. speak of the devil. 以前我不会 speak of the devil 时, 我都是说, that's a coincidence. 或是 talk of the devil. 2. that's the best thing since sliced bread. 像这句话要避免说成, the best thing in the history, 听来就不那么道地. 老美他们都是用 the best thing since sliced bread 来表示有史以来最好的事情. 这句话我常听到, 例如有一次网路银行 net bank 的广告就说, net bank is the best thing since sliced bread. 不过如果你要展现一下自己的创意和幽默感, 建议你可以'故意'把这句话说成, that's the best thing since the invention of space shuttle. (自从太空梭发明以来最棒的事.) 3. when in rome, do as the romans do. when you are at rome, do as they do at rome. 他说, when in rome, do as the romans do. 从字面上的意思来看, when in rome, do as the romans do. 另外关于罗马还有一些很常听到的成语可以顺便记一下, rome was not built in a day. (罗马不是一天造成的.) all roads lead to rome. (条条大路通罗马.) 4. the lesser of the two evils. 记得我刚来美国时我都会把这句话照中文的字面意义下去直接翻译, 说成, the better one of two rotten apples. 直到有一次我班上的同学纠正我说, 这句话应该是 the lesser of the two evils. 5. this is like chickens and eggs. 例如, 到底是有钱才去从政还是从政之后才有钱? this is like chickens and eggs. 6. beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. 要是看到某个美男和某个丑女走在一起, 你就可以深表婉惜地说, "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." 至于速配的话, 可以试试, every jack has its jill. 或是 let beggars match with beggars. (乞丐配乞丐) 7. practice makes perfect. 类似的成语例如 when at first you don't succeed, try try again. 8. there is no such a thing as free lunch. 总之, 当我们听到一件事情好到不可思议时, 例如一元手机, 免费上网, 我们就可以对别人说, there is no such a thing as free lunch. 9. if you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with your bullshit. 所以各位要记得, baffle others with your bullshit. 还有一些类似摆烂的成语, 蛮有趣的, 例如, if everything else fails, manipulate the data. 或是 if at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that suggests you tried. (如果你不成功, 就把建议你这么作的所有证据都给毁了.) 10. god is shining on you. 你真是幸运. god is shining on you 就是指一个人非常幸运, 也就等于 you are very lucky 的意思. 一般人在电话录音就是说, "please leave a message after the beep." 不过最近听到一个更酷的, 那人只说了一句, "you know what to do."
