n, an old gold-mining town northeast of Taipei, is crammed with tourists on weekends. But Chinkuashi, an older mining town just two kilometers away, remains still and silent. It has no charming art galleries or giftshops. There are no warm teashops to welcome couples looking for a romantic place to chat. Perched on a cliff above the blue-green sea and surrounded by mountains, it looks and feels like a remote outpost. In Chinkuashi, more ghosts than people walk the streets. It wasn't always this way. In 1889, Patu Station, a small village near Chinkuashi, was a lively place. Hundreds of workers came that humid summer to build a railway bridge across the Keelung River; among them a Cantonese man who had panned for gold in California. While working in the shadow of the iron bridge, he tried his luck by dipping a pan into the river sand. They built the Prince Hotel in Chinkuashi, a grand mansion boasting the most luxurious rooms the island had ever seen. Miners who had struck it rich stayed here, flaunting their new wealth. Jewelry shops and restaurants featuring Chinese and Japanese cuisine crowded the streets. These truly were Chinkuashi's golden days. But there was a dark side to this world of gold and luxurious living. During World War Two, the local Chinese, forced to work the mines like slaves, were joined by foreign prisoners of war. The Japanese made the men work long hours under extremely difficult conditions. at has awed visitors since it was first built in the early twelfth century. From the ground to the top of its central tower, the temple stands about as tall as a thirty-story building. At the main entrance, I admire the achievement of Angkor Wat's ancient architects. Just past the main entrance is a cross-shaped courtyard. Its upper walls are covered with carved images of dancers; a stone reminder of the women who filled these halls with movement, color and music long ago. I notice that what looked like a single building from the outside is, in fact, a collection of stairs, hallways and galleries built on many levels. From here, I start up the steep stairs leading to the highest level of the temple—the symbolic mountain home of Shiva. As I climb higher, I reflect on man's desire to sit on the throne of the gods. 对“建议”的建议 A Word on Advice 　　 　　Webster defines advice as being, "a recommendation with regard to a course of action." 　　韦氏字典给“建议”一词定义如下：“对某行为提出意见或忠告。” 　　The expression, "I need some advice" has to be one of the most horrifying statements in the English language. What makes it remarkably terrifying is that the advisor is usually confronted with it out of the blue and with little or no warning. My daughter is an expert at this. Lately I have been able to predict when she will call. It usually happens when I am having the type of day when everything seems to be going well. I am actually relaxed with few things that have to be done. It is almost as if I send out a signal to her that I am ready for the challenge. The call always begins with the expression, "Dad". The word is not as important as how it is stated. It sounds like a question being asked by someone who does not want to be heard. In other words, it is a little quieter than a whisper. I know she knows it is I, because she did the calling and I am confident that she knows the sound of my voice. I would tell her of morals and ethics that made life as good as it can possibly be. Years later, when my daughter hit the wonderful teenaged years, she didn't accept my advice as she did in the past. In fact, she obviously dreaded it. However, I gave it to her anyway because I wanted her to survive her teenaged years. I survived them so why shouldn't she listen to me and take in the knowledge that I had from the experiences of my past. For years she never came to me for advice but I continued to submit it. Unlike giving advice to my daughter, giving advice to my parents involves me guessing what to do without the experience of going through what they are presently going through. At first thought, the task of preparing to begin life away from home can seem daunting, if not overwhelming. And they believe in romance, and that means unattached as well as attached. 　中国人忙于背英语的同时，殊不知越来越多的外国人也在学中文，随着中国影响力的提升，以及奥运的推动作用，一些中文因在国际上传播广泛而被英文词典收纳，直接采用汉语拼音作为汉语对应的英文单词。　　按照国际惯例，中国大部分的人名、地名都是直接用拼音的，在目前世界上最权威的《新牛津英语词典》中出现的中国人名的翻译就采用了汉语拼音的拼写形式：“毛泽东”以汉语拼音形式出现MaoZedong；孙中山的名字则是SunYat-sen之后标出SunYixian(孙逸仙的汉语拼音)。 　　一些中国特色的东西也均采用拼音，其中最典型的是饺子、旗袍，其实二者在英文中都有相关的单词，饺子是dumpling，旗袍英文叫做cheongsam，但随着饺子、旗袍在老外中的影响力越来越大，都逐渐采用了汉语拼音：jiaozi、qipao。伴随着李小龙这个名字，中国功夫影片席卷世界，英文单词中出现了一个新词——“Kungfu”，用来专指源于中国的“功夫”。“功夫”的英译，源于外国人对中国文化的选择性吸收；“福娃”，本来的国际译名是“Friendlies”，虽然有“友好的人”的意思，但在传播上不如“Fuwa”更加简洁、响亮。2006年10月，奥运会吉祥物“福娃”的国际译名由原来的“Friendlies”被正式更名为“Fuwa”，是中国人主动向世界传输本土文化的表现。继“福娃”之后，2007年“嫦娥”这个有特定内涵的中国语汇，随着中国成功发射首颗探月卫星“嫦娥一号”，各国媒体在报道时统一使用了汉语拼音的发音和拼写——“Chang’e”，充分展示了一个泱泱大国绵延几千年的绚丽文化。 　　还有一些“出口转内销”的词汇，如来自上海的常用词"Dia(嗲)"被编入新版《牛津英语大词典》，“嗲”字本来来源于英文单词“dear(亲爱的，可爱的)”，因为上海作为国际大都市的知名度越来越高，“嗲”字也便由“dear”变身“dia”，回到英语世界。 　　在《牛津简明英语词典》中录入了相当多的拼音的中文词条，都是非常有中国特色的词汇，反应了中国的饮食等特色文化，如：chow mein(炒面).feng shui (风水).tofu(豆腐).lychee(荔枝)..typhoon(台风,).sampan(舢板).ginseng(人参).kumquat(金橘).kowtow(叩头).oolong(乌龙).kylin(麒麟).tung oil(桐油)等等。
